ABSTRACT

The mother archetype was one of the first parts of the collected unconscious to be written about by Carl Jung. Jung's work in the area of psychology included his research into many other areas of human endeavors including mythology, alchemy and religion. Jung says the following regarding the mother archetype: Like any other archetype, the mother archetype appears under an almost infinite variety of aspects. The attachment between mother and child was tenuous at best depending on the psychology of the plantation owner to whom they were enslaved. The African goddess Yemoja is only one of many who made their travels to South and North America as archetypes under the cover of Catholicism. Slaves traveling to South and North America, Cuba and Haiti brought Yemoja as their archetypal mother who later became the Virgin Mary. African Americans have a spiritual tradition that is strong, even though traditional African slave spiritual practices were forbidden by slaveholders.
