ABSTRACT

Content management systems, or technologies for creating, organizing, modifying,

and removing data contained in a database or content archive, have made it easier

for businesses to institute single-source documentation, or the creation of several

deliverables from one such database or archive. The rush toward single-sourcing

has obliged many technical communicators to familiarize themselves with new soft-

ware and computer languages. This chapter introduces and discusses one popular

technology for single-source digital documentation: Extensible mark-up language

(XML), which offers a means of encoding text files in order to distinguish among

different content types or categories.
