ABSTRACT
Semantic webs and mind maps provide visual clues that help learners evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the content their webs represent. By studying the appearance of the diagram, students and teachers can glean insights and see how to address areas of need. This method of evaluation is an act of visual inquiry, and a few design guidelines can have a powerful impact on how creating diagrams facilitates this type of metacognition. These guidelines are:
1. Use one word (or phrase) per bubble. 2. Create meaning with color and image. 3. Compose ideas with visual balance.
