ABSTRACT

Parents are in a position to help their kids find their inner compass by helping them unplug and avoid the trap of constant digital multitasking. When faced with life decisions, major or minor, many young people feel hesitant and uncertain because they are so overwhelmed. For young adults, figuring out where to go to high school or college, what to study, where to live, which job to take, or what interests are worth pursuing can seem like impossible tasks-the stakes appear intensely high. Even when parents and educators aren’t placing expectations on kids about these decisions, kids sometimes feel intense pressure because they have so much going on and are overly aware of the many options available to them. It is hard for kids to focus on what they really want or what feels right. Blocking out the noise around them-in both their immediate and their virtual environments-is difficult. With awareness and practice, however, they can improve their focus, become more relaxed, and learn to be happier.
