ABSTRACT

Almost one million people die by suicide worldwide every year; we do not

know exactly how many in the armed services, but there are many. In the United

States, veterans are twice as likely to die by suicide than their civilian counter-

parts. That is far too many. Could it be even higher? What about Canada? They

do not know. In order to reduce suicide and suicidal behavior in soldiers and

veterans, many policies and procedures have been proposed and implemented.

Although many of the approaches may have been/are effective, often they are

not sufficiently comprehensive to address the complexity of trauma and suicide

in soldiers.
