ABSTRACT

In a 2001 study by the same organizations, comics were read most often by only 2% of girls and 4% of boys (Gabilliet, 2010, p. 207). When it comes to U.S. adult readers, data are scarce because studies on reading habits do not even (though they may in the future) include comics as a category offered to the respondents (Gabilliet, 2010, p. 208), whereas similar studies in Taiwan and Japan frequently feature comics. The best data available, based on studies of U.S. comic bookstore clientele, suggest that in 1997, there were approximately 1,250,000 comics readers, of which a disproportionate number (over 80% to over 90%, depending on different studies) were male.
