ABSTRACT
It was presumably because of this etymological background that the seven· teenth century Japanese-Portuguese dictionary defined the word samurai as it did. Despite the existence of these various terms for warrior and their gradations in meaning, in the present essay, I shall exclusively use the word bushi to denote men of military background specializing in martial arts and combat, and the term bushidan to refer to the bands they formed.
