ABSTRACT

The importance of health as a factor in African development is incontestable. What is controversial is how to go about ensuring good health for the people of the continent, especially those in the sub-Saharan region. This region is turgid with some of the world’s most nagging health problems. The deadly nature of these diseases is hardly news to those in the international development arena. What may be newsworthy is the fact that residents of contemporary Africa die or are permanently incapacitated by preventable or easily curable diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, dysentery and sleeping sickness.
