ABSTRACT

Now, from Yale, comes the letter from R.L. Purdy (July 4) refuting or at least questioning the Gittings suggestion that Florence felt jealousy over Thomas Hardy’s memories of his happiness in early years. Never before or after his death – when I stayed at Max Gate – did she show any inkling of what Mr Gittings implies, that there had been some madness in Emma and that she, Florence, had put this about. Max Gate doubtless became a difficult household for the first pair, as it occasionally may have been for the second.
