ABSTRACT

Edmund Gosse T.H. sent me an inscribed gift copy [of The Woodlanders]. R.L.S. was at that moment setting sail, with a cargo of stallions and monkeys, for New York. It, The Woodlanders, was the only thing he wished for, and I gave him my own precious copy. Wasn’t that devotion? The tear wells to my eye as I think how nicely I behaved about it. When he heard of my sacrifice, Hardy wrote in another copy; R.L.S. was immensely touched. Tears, have your way! We all three behaved beautifully (p. 292).
