ABSTRACT

Over the last two decades there has been an enormous increase in interest in the analysis of firm location behaviour. For scholars working in this field this is obviously an extremely welcome development, as increasing numbers of scholars from a range of disciplines participate in the debates. While this increase in interest leads to new breakthroughs in our understanding of location phenomena, on the other hand, however, much of the research in these areas often leads to a certain amount of confusion as analytical terminology is used in different, and sometimes conflicting, ways. These confusions are sometimes exacerbated by the fact that the authors are unaware that analytical terminology they employ has a very specific meaning and logic, which has been developed on the basis of a long research tradition.
