ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I start the exposition of what I called the ‘four’ Stoic theories. All four were designed to meet specific challenges raised by different kinds of incompatibilist opponents. In order fully to appreciate why the Stoics developed these theories and not others, it is essential to look carefully at the philosophical context of each.
