ABSTRACT

The roots of the developing reform movement in Hungary lay in the preceding period of change, the Renaissance, which found a home in Hungary as early as the 1470s. To explore these roots will be well worth the effort for any scholar of the Reformation. At the outset we must acknowledge the many difficulties involved: Hungarian source material of the fifteenth and early sixteenth century is often fragmentary. Much has not survived,1 and many areas of research have therefore been neglected. But if we are prepared to gather clues from many sources and try to piece together a picture of what was happening, we will find at least some outlines will appear, and will enhance our understanding of the period of early Reform.
