ABSTRACT
I start with the quotation from St Augustine's De vera religione with which Edmund Husserl concludes Cartesian Meditations because I wish to examine potentially significant relationships between phenomenology, literature and the dogmatic principle. I concentrate on two writers, Matthew Arnold and John Henry Newman.
