ABSTRACT

Up to this point, appraisal has been treated in the context of RM, in which the main considerations are administrative value and legal requirements. However, international guidelines for a training cur riculum in archives and records management place the subject of appraisal clearly within the area of archival management and not in that of RM.1 This (to some, eccentric) determination suggests that there is more to be said about the acquisition of archival materials, the assessment of the information within them and the principles behind an archival appraisal programme.
