ABSTRACT

Information management cannot be carried on without using com puters, which today are the essential and universally used machines for the capture, storage, processing and transfer of information. The ready availability and growing capacity of personal computers, and the general introduction of online multi-terminal networks in adminis tration mean that computing services of some kind are within the reach of most administrative or research departments, however small and iso lated they may be. Archives services are not excluded from this gener alization, even though at the time of writing, the majority of established archives services are still, at least in part, being run manually.
