ABSTRACT

Other R eligious a nd Monastic Orders o n Cyprus Vinually all the religious orders thai arose or develope{! in western Europe established themselves in Cyprus during the thirteenth cennlry. The establishment of a Latin kingdom there from 1192 onwards and its proximity to the Holy Land had made it an attractive localion both as a springboard for missions 10 central Asia, such as the famous Mongol missions of the Dominican Order, and as a refuge from warfare and depredations. In this chapter I propose to examine the establishment of the religious orders on Cyprus, their evolulion and activities there, and to wbat extent these resembled or differed from contemporary developments in Latin Europe. The individual characteristics of the various orders will also be examined, as well as their relationships with the crown, the papacy and the secular clergy.
