ABSTRACT
These three interesting papers are concerned with the representation of labour in visual images or in literary texts. This is a difficult subject to study, not least because the materials for it are much less abundant than one might have thought. For all its centrality to human existence, work has, over the centuries, not been a particularly popular theme for either imaginative writers or artists. By comparison with love or warfare, the experience of labour has been relatively neglected as an artistic topic.
