ABSTRACT

Harington's autograph revisions, easily identifiable because the ink of his slightly tremulous hand has dried a grey-black colour (as opposed to the brown of the scribe), are frequent. Most of the variable and idiosyncratic punctuation has been added by him. The numbering of eleven of the decennial poems (decades) from 11.80 to IV.20 has slipped by one in F, while BL has the correct numbering. Harington has made easily identifiable autograph changes to nine of the eleven, sometimes altering nearby numbers and sometimes not. At the end of Book II, the scribe has left a blank page (116), perhaps uncertain whether Harington might want to include some personal poems, which are at this point inBL (see below).
