ABSTRACT

Aug. 5th. We cut a large broad track today & got the canoes dragged over land for about half a mile & put in the river above the rapids. The boat I took out of the water & carried with 6o men just as she was. In the afternoon I had to patch up & lash my two canoes together. In the middle of the river about a mile above the rapids is a small round island perfectly bare with its banks rising sheer 7 or eight feet from the water & on it is a group of some 1 5 or 20 huts which cover it entirely, it has a most peculiar appearance & looks like a round fort such as one sees off Portsmouth. There is not a herb of any sort to be seen on it. We captured two women but could not get much information out of them, except that there was another large cataract a day higher up the river.
