ABSTRACT

Nelson & Parke on with the loads & would probably reach this place in another 4 days-I had judged exactly right in saying it would take him 25 days in spite of what Stanley had said-in his note Stairs asked me to send him food as his was nearly finished. In two or three hours Nelson turned up with the rest of the loads. He looks wretched & thin & ill & is hardly able to walk, he went to bed at once. They have had a fearful time of it in the Manyema camp-Stanley desired Parke to write an official letter giving an account of their stay there, this letter I copy & it will tell its own story. 1 This letter is only a short & mild description of what they suffered during their stay & numberless more cases of theft, annoyance & even insult could be cited. I sent Stairs a supply of food in charge of 10 men under Baroko & hope it will reach him before his is all finished. Stanley tries to make as little as possible of what Nelson & Parke suffered & talks about their expecting to find themselves in an hotel.
