ABSTRACT

In 2007, retired Major General Antonio Taguba discussed publicly the investigation he led into the reports of detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, in Iraq. Thencommander Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez ordered the investigation after he became aware of the allegations of widespread abuse at the prison. General Taguba made a number of very serious claims about the limits of the investigation and about the failure of any investigation to fully examine the role of the senior military and civilian leadership’s knowledge and involvement in creating the conditions that led to the abuse.
