ABSTRACT

A variety of architectural styles were evident in the bungalows and the bungalow’s offspring built in India during the twentieth century. Some have fallen by the wayside but others endure. At the beginning of the century it was the classical and the Carpenter Gothic that featured most strongly all over India with the former more especially in British New Delhi and the latter in Bengaluru. Some houses were architect-designed but many, many more were produced by the hands of the mistris. The architect designed houses, nevertheless, led the way.
