ABSTRACT

If one accepts that a bungalow is a single or one-and-a-half storey groundhugging detached house with a welcoming porch and, at least, a partial verandah then they are no longer a significant part of the Indian-built environment or housing market. Bungalows as they are regarded in India would be called villas or simply detached houses elsewhere. Bungalow-type dwellings are still indeed being built in India as shown in Chapter 7 but they are increasingly the homes of the wealthy not the middle-class. If the singlefamily detached house displaced traditional houses as the house form of choice in response to evolving cultural patterns, socio-economic changes in society are now displacing the bungalow.
