ABSTRACT

Those changes in the fall of 1065 probably did not come as a complete surprise. Judith and Tostig’s departure was caused by political crisis; Tostig lost his earldom during what is sometimes called the Northern Rebellion, which had been brewing for at least a year, probably more. The events are straightforward: the Northumbrian thegns revolted against Tostig’s rule in early October of 1065; Harold, as the King’s deputy, was unable to make peace between Tostig and the Northumbrian nobles; Tostig and Judith departed for Flanders in November as exiles.
