ABSTRACT

In this appendix, editions are provided of four texts discussed in the foregoing study: the Essay of Francis North, the synopsis of the Essay by an anonymous individual, and the critical comments on the Essay by Isaac Newton and by Roger North. Of these four texts, the originals each differ in format. The ftrst and second are printed-one as a book, the other as a short notice in a periodical publication. The third and fourth are in manuscript-one, a private letter, the other, an incomplete set of notes. All the texts conform to seventeenth-century practice which differs in some respects from modern practice. Hence, the following principles have been applied in editing the texts.

Pagination/foliation. In the editions, the original pagination or foliation of each text is indicated in bold type at the appropriate places within a text. This original pagination/foliation is used for all references not only in the foregoing study but also in the footnotes to the edited texts. To determine the pagination in Francis North's Essay, ten copies were consulted for the present edition.1 In all these copies, the ftnal page of text is incorrectly numbered '25 '. 2 In most copies the engraved plate containing Tab. i and ii (Figure l.A), which was issued with a fold at the bottom, is cropped and bound uniform with the size of the other leaves, being placed with the 'Scheme' after the last page oftext.3 In placing the engraved plate and the 'Scheme' differently in the edition, I treated the unpaginated front matter as follows: page i = title page; page ii = blank; pages iii and iv = epistolary introduction; page l = blank; page 2 = engraved plate (Figure l.A); page 3 ='Scheme'; page 4 =blank. (From page 5 the Essay is paginated.)
