Thisauthor'sdesignbeingtoexplainthenatureofmusick,hebeginstoinquire intothecauseofsound.Inorderwhereunto,heconsiderssomeofthechief phrenomenaofsound,as1.thatitmaybeproduced,accordingtohim,inthe Torricellianvacuity;2.thatitcausesmotioninsolidbodies,andisdiminished bytheinterpositionofsolidbodies;3.thatifthebodiesinterposedarevery thick,itspassageiswhollyobstructed;4.thatitseemstocometotheearin straitlineswhentheobjectissoscituatedthatitcannotcomeinastraitlineto theear;5.thatwhentheairisnotinmotion,itsextentisspherical;andwhen thereisawind,thesphereisenlargedonthatpart,towhichthewindblows, anddiminishedonthecontrarypart;6.thatitarrivesnottotheearinan instant,butconsiderablyslowerthan[lighttotheorganof]sight;7.thatit comesasquickagainstthewindaswithit,thoughnotsoloudnorsofar.
