ABSTRACT

A short text preserved in ten late medieval witnesses recommends a progression of devotional activities for a person experiencing the symptoms of imminent death:

Whan þi hed quakyth, Memento. Whan þi lyppsy blakyth, Confessio. Whan þi nose scharpyth, Contricio. Whan þi lymmys starkyt, Satisfacio. Whan þi brest pantyth, Nosce te [ipsum]. Whan þi wynde wantyt. Miserere. When þi eyne fylmyn, Libere me Domine. Whan deth followyth, Venite ad iudicium.1
