Such claims have never been sustained, but they thrive in the public consciousness because CCTV is a seductive technology. It has become an icon for personal security, and, for politicians, its promotion is guaranteed to create a feel-good response. Such is the passion for the technology, that in the past, critics of CCTV have been portrayed as enemies of the public interest.
