ABSTRACT

Australia, like the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe, has seen a decade of policies for sustainable transport (Department of the Environment and Heritage, 1992; Department of Transport et al., 1996; Western Australian Planning Commission, 1997a; Queensland Transport, 1998; National Transport Secretariat, 2003). The vision of most transport policies is for a reduction in private car travel and the development of an integrated transport system where public transport and non-motorised transport are realistic alternatives for most trips. One of the means of achieving this is through better integration of land use planning and transport. Planners, urban designers and transport engineers have a key role in this approach by designing neighbourhoods at a scale and form that support walking and cycling, and public transport accessibility.
