ABSTRACT

Ibis note is focused on travel behaviour in accession countries of Central Europe. In the period of transition from planned to market economies a rapid modal shift has been observed in these countries which follows developments observed in most developed countries of Northern America and Western Europe and definitely cannot be considered a movement toward sustainability. Research on ongoing change processes may help to formulate recommendations on ways and measures that might re-orient the process of transition. At the same time, some practical lessons can be leamt from accession countries in which public transport still plays a leading role, especially in urban areas.
