ABSTRACT
This is followed by the first of two papers by experts on the Chinese liner shipping industry - Shen and Lee - based in two different institutions and two different countries - Dalian and Pusan in China and Korea respectively. The first of their two papers focuses upon the development of COSCO (the Chinese state-owned liner shipping company) and how it has become a leading player in the container shipping market since the 1960s. Its role and importance are analysed and also its plans for the immediate future within the context of new policies emerging in general for the Chinese economy.
