ABSTRACT

The year 1901 witnessed the death of Queen Victoria and the accession of King Edward VII. From the appearance of the tales collected as The Memoirs o f Sherlock Holmes until the first instalment of The Hound o f the Baskervilles in the Strand in August 1901, there were no new appearances of Sherlock Holmes in print. The Hound o f the Baskervilles was subtided 'Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' to indicate that this was not a revival or resurrection of Holmes but rather an event which occurred before his demise at the Reichenbach Falls recorded in The Final Problem.
