ABSTRACT

After the publication of Braddon's Thou Art the Man, Pirkis's Loveday Brooke and Corbett's When the Sea Gives Up Its Dead in 1894, there is a conspicuous gap in fictional narratives involving the female detective until 1897. In the tradition of the detective narrative in English, there is an explanation for this temporary hiatus. In effect, the disappearance of Sherlock Holmes led to a temporary absence of Sherlock's sisters.
