ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on representations of the rural. Research into rural representations normally considers the present-day situation. This may result in knowledge of current senses of rural places. But it provides little information on the temporal dynamics of the representations, and therefore on the mechanisms that created the current representations. This limits the possibilities of forecasting future representations. This chapter explores the development of rural representations over time by analysing the contents of a television programme on rural areas in the Netherlands.
