ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the basic functions of a theory, advanced issues for theory evaluation, appropriate data for evaluation, and both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods. Some of the analytical methods discussed in Chapter 3 will also be used in this chapter, in particular, the methods for predictive and construct validity. However, the focus on the use of the methods will be different in this chapter. In Chapter 3, the validity of the theory was assumed to be true so that the empirical methods could be used to evaluate the validity of a measure. In this chapter, the validity of the measure is assumed to be acceptable so that the empirical methods can be used to evaluate the validity of the theory.
