ABSTRACT

The information in a SIS can be used to both identify and solve system problems. In some domains the identification and solution of problems will be the primary functions of the SIS, with the theoretical development and evaluation being more a means to an end than an end in itself. This could be true if the basic SIS goals were issues like accident avoidance or other public-safety issues. This chapter will cover methods that can be used for the identification and solution of problems. There are many different types of problems that could be addressed with a SIS. Considering basic problem issues such as why, when, or what happens in a system helps define problems. Once defined, these problems can be further elaborated and solved using a problem solution cycle.
