ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author suggests that what the Deuteronomists did in respect of the composition of the Former Prophets, he also wonder more and more with his British colleague Richard Coggins whether whoever-did-what should be called 'Deuteronomists'. Any strong definition of the Former Prophets as 'the Deut. History' implies comprehensive attention to the entirety of Joshua–Kings–possibly more than the Joshua–Kings, but at least as much as Joshua–Kings. However, 'Deuteronomistic History/Historiography', without a definite article, is currently preferred by several scholars. Erik Eynikel's Flemish doctoral thesis of 1989 was revised and issued in English as The Reform of King Josiah and the Composition of the Deuteronomistic History. The longest single piece is Romer and de Pury's comprehensive and magisterial review of 'Deuteronomistic historiography'. The title Prophets or Former Prophets reflects those who are leading figures more accurately than the title.
