ABSTRACT

This chapter concentrates on some critical factors that must be addressed if safety is to be achieved in the design process. There are two complementary standards which deal with the management of design: BS 7000 and BS EN ISO 9000. The Standard emphasizes the need for a design system to have documented procedures for control and verification. A review of relevant cases concerning the product and personal injury or damage can be rewarding, when the final design is being developed. This will give specific information on what has gone wrong in the past and whether a defect was attributable to a failure in design, manufacture or warnings. The reliability requirements of the new product have an important place in the design input for these may influence its safety. Safety-critical parts can be identified so that particular attention can be paid to them in the design process.
