The early reform era

Even before the official ending of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, an enterprising local cultural cadre began documenting shawm players’ traditional repertory. Overt ceremonial activity only began again in about 1979. Society was still locked in poverty; it was to be several years before many villages acquired even a sporadic supply of electricity.
