ABSTRACT

We now pass from these legal and ceremonial preliminaries to the magical rite, yowota, which inaugurates the gardening cycle. If so far To’uluwa, the chief, has been more prominent than anyone else, he now makes way for Bagido’u, his matrilineal nephew, to whom he has delegated the duties of garden magician. Henceforth Bagido’u will address the village; and it will be his part to fix the dates, and perform most of the ritual acts.
