InChapter1,wediscussedtwodefinitionsofsafety:inthefirstdefinition, safetywasfreedomfromrisk;whileintheseconddefinition,itwas managementofriskwithinavaluethatisacceptabletothesociety.Now, letusconsidersafetyatanindividuallevel.Personally,howwouldyou definesafetyasitrelatestoyourjob?Howdoesyourdefinitionrelatewith theminimumstandardsprescribedbyyourregulator?Asapilot,youmay consideraflightwithoutanundesirableoutcomeasasafeflight;asa mechanic,youmayconsidermaintenanceactionsthatdonotresultinan undesirableoutcometobesafeactions;andasamanager,youmay consideraflightoramaintenanceoperationthatdoesnotresultinpersonal injuryorpropertydamagetobeasafeoperation.Inanycase,these definitionsassumeabsenceofalosstomeanpresenceofsafety:theyare passivedefinitionsofsafety.Additionally,thesedefinitionsfallunderthe paradigm'endjustifyingthemeans'.Ifwe,asanindustry,donotwantto
