ABSTRACT
In the last chapter, we highlighted how the 'employment problem' in advanced economies is a key rationale for enabling deprived neighbourhoods to find additional means of livelihood beyond employment. The aim of this chapter is to show that the extent and distribution of self-help activity also warrants that much greater attention is paid to this form of activity than has so far been the case.
