ABSTRACT

In 2007, Brazil hosted the largest population of Japanese immigrants and its descendants – approximately 1.3 million people – of any country in the world. Most of these Japanese descendants’ families are immersed in Brazilian culture and society. At the same time, many of the parents who emigrated attempt to maintain their Japanese culture – such as language, foods, beliefs and so on – at home and in their family lives. The children do not readily accept their parents’ cultural beliefs, however, and in most cases they neither speak the Japanese language nor have they visited Japan.
