ABSTRACT

Before developing a set of conceptual tools capable of dealing with mobility, which will be the aim of the following chapter, I will first re-examine the evolution of mobilities with reference to empirical research. In the previous chapter I presented four theoretical models corresponding to specific standpoints in relation to the fluidification of the social. In so doing I regretted the weakness of their links with empirical research. The question is thus, on the basis of research findings, what can be said about the development of mobility ? What is known about it?
