Wittgensteinwasaremarkablephilosopher.Thedepthandbreadthofhis philosophicalprojectissimplybreathtaking.Wittgensteinisalsoanotoriously difficultphilosophertoreadandunderstand.Thisisnotbecausehewritesin difficult,jargon-ladenlanguage.Rather,itisbecausehisfundamental philosophicalinsightsareimpossibletostateoutright.Inordertolearnwhat Wittgensteinhastoteachuswehavetoembarkonaphilosophicaljourney whosefinaldestinationcannotbeknownuntilithasbeenreached.Thismeans thatwhenyoupickupanyphilosophicaltextwrittenbyWittgenstein,you cannotremainpassiveinyourphilosophicalreadingofit.Youwilleitherfind yourselfinvolvedinanentirelynewkindofphilosophicaladventureoryou willbebemusedandultimatelyrejectthetextbeforeyou.Wittgensteinknew thathewouldhavetwokindsofreaders.Healsoknewthatwhattypeofreader youtumouttobeisultimatelyuptoyou.Noonecanmakeanotherperson embarkonajourneyofthoughtunlesstheyarewillingtodoso.
