ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an explanation of the nature of intervention and regulation during the Franco period (1939-1975).

Section I examines the main characteristics of the Spanish banking regulatory framework from the end of the Civil War to 1962. Section II looks at the 1962 Banking Law and subsequent reforms. Section III describes the main regulatory bodies before and after the 1962 Banking Law. Finally, Section IV reviews the main traditional accounts regarding the role of the Spanish banking system in this period. A reinterpretation of most of the traditional assessments of this role is the main objective of the remaining chapters.
