ABSTRACT

Martin Ferry and Irene McMaster Introduction This chapter provides a comparative assessment of the role of regional government in the evolution of regional economic development networks in Polish Silesia (ĝląskie) and Moravia Silesia (Moravskoslezsko) in the Czech Republic. Across the EU, increasing emphasis is laid by academics and policy makers on the importance of the ‘region’ in interpretations of economic change, exploring how endogenous resources, rather than external intervention, can guide regional development paths. In the face of growing fiscal pressures, the attraction of models that propose a reduction of direct state intervention in regions and a focus on how to exploit endogenous regional resources is strong.
