ABSTRACT
While the term "human rights" is of relative recent currency on the continent, people have been struggling for freedom, dignity, equality and social justice for centu ries in Africa. In Africa, as is the case elsewhere, that which is now called human rights finds its foundations in the struggle to assert these core values of human existence.1
