ABSTRACT
The Sterbebücher in this category share with the sermons on preparing for death treated in the previous chapter the emphasis on the central Reformation teaching of justication by faith and certainty of salvation. They have been termed handbooks or manuals because they aim to provide a set way of proceeding, a ritual to follow, for persons – laity or clergy – ministering to dying individuals. In form, however, they display considerable differences.
